Create A Rock Solid Gym Routine
Summer break is slowly coming to an end and for many of you summer was a time of vacation and travel. Health and fitness were not high on your list of things to do and fell to the wayside. Now, here is another new school year and you’re ready to get in shape and prioritize your health by creating healthy routines. Today I’m going to offer your 5 hacks you can use to create a rock solid gym routine and improve your health and fitness.
#1. Choose to Workout in the Morning
Choosing a morning workout is super effective for a couple of reasons.
- You get it done and over with and don’t have to worry about it for the rest of the day.
- Helps to wake you up and get you energized and ready for the day naturally
- Feel good endorphins help to boost and improve your mood by making you less grouchy.
#2. Follow or create a fitness plan or workout regimen
Understanding or having in mind what your primary fitness goals are in advance can help decrease confusion when you are at the gym.
- Are you trying to lose weight?
- Are you focusing on becoming stronger?
- Do you just want to improve your overall health and fitness?
Having a clear idea of what your goals are and what you are seeking to achieve can help you find fitness plans or workouts that will contain the exercises and specific adaptations that will help you achieve those goals.
#3. Wear Comfortable Workout Gear
Wearing workout gear that fits your body appropriately, and where you can move easily in without feeling self-conscious can boost your confidence as well as your performance. I’m not saying you have to “get dressed up” for the gym but perhaps trading your ratty sweats and oversized tee-shirt for a nice workout top and leggings can improve your overall gym experience.
Making sure you are wearing shoes that are not old and worn down but will provide you with good support and cushion. This is especially important if you are running on the treadmill or participating in high impact activity that involves a lot of jumping. Making sure your shoes have appropriate shock absorption can really save and help protect your joints.
#4. Prepare for the gym in advance
Instead of waiting for the last minute to put together your gym bag you can prepare your bag the night before the gym or you can even be super duper efficient and pack your gym bag for the week. Packing all the key materials you will need either during the workout session or after can ensure that you get to the gym on time focused and ready for your workout and that you don’t leave any important things behind.
Key items you might want to pack in your gym bag are:
- Headphones
- Lifting gloves
- Resistance Bands
- Ankle Weights
- Extra Gym clothes
- Change of clothes
- Shower accessories
- Water bottle
- Deodorant
- Post workout snacks such as nuts, a protein bar or banana
#5. Create and stick to a set schedule
As with anything when you create a schedule and commit to a specific time you are more likely to follow through with the behavior and it will help to establish and create discipline and consistency. Both of which are important for creating and building a healthy fitness habit.
Decide in advance how many days you want to workout and what your preferred days and times are, block those days and times off in your planner and set a reminder or an alarm to go off each day to remind you it’s gym time.
